Dear Dr. Rosemond

Re: “ADD diagnoses can be real tricky”  San Diego Union Tribune, 6/26/04

Dear Dr. Rosemond,

Until such time as an objective, physical abnormality is demonstrated in a child/person (abnormality = disease; no abnormality = normal = no disease) that child/person cannot be said to have a disease, any disease.

At the November 16-18, 1998, NIH, Consensus Conference on ADHD,

Carey, reporting on “Is ADHD a Valid Disorder?” concluded:

“What is…described as ADHD in the United States appears to be a set of  normal behavioral variations..."

Degrandpre [15], commenting on the Report of the Panel, observed:

“… it appears that you define disease as a maladaptive cluster of characteristics. In the history of science and medicine, this would not be a valid definition of disease.”

Their having failed to prove that ADHD is a disease, they seek to re-define the word ‘disease’.

I testified [16]:

“Without an iota of proof … the NIMH  proclaims the … children “brain-diseased,” “abnormal.” CHADD, funded by  Ciba-Geigy, … has spread the “neuro-biological” lie.  The US Department of Education,   absolving itself of controlling the children and rendering them literate, coerces the labeling and drugging…ADHD is a total, 100% fraud.”

The final statement of Panel [17], November 18, 1998, was:

...we do not have an independent, valid test for ADHD, and there are no data to indicate that ADHD is due to a brain malfunction.”

Nor has their been replicated proof since then  that ADHD is an abnormality/disease..  In the risk vs. benefit equation in so-called ADHD, there is never an abnormality disease on the “risk” side (where in medicine and surgery there is always an abnormality/disease).  This being the case, the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is not difficult or tricky but is never possible.  What’s more the training of all physicians is such that they know when they have demonstrated/proved the presence of an abnormality and when they have not.

The representation of ADD/ADHD (or any predecessor) to be a disease/chemical imbalance needing chemical balancers/drug, which began in a Congressional hearing in 1970 and continues to the present, is a fraud perpetrated by US psychiatry, all “mental health,” the Congress and the White House.

In May, 2003, Carey testified to the House that 17% of US schoolchildren (8-9 million) were on psychiatric drugs, and now, President Bush claiming this represents underdiagnosis, seeks comprehensive screening throughout the public schools of the nation for all psychiatric “disorders” none of them diseases—not one.

Sincerely,

Fred A. Baughman Jr., MD
